London Blitz Walks Background Information
In May 1940 Britain stood alone. The expectation was that London and other major cities would face a sustained and devastating campaign of bombing by the Luftwaffe. But for the time being all was quiet on the home front.
On the afternoon of September 7th 1940 all that changed. Londoners were enjoying the late summer sunshine when at 4.36 p.m. the air raid sirens sounded. The Blitz had begun. By the time it had finished in May 1941 1.4 million people had been made homeless and over 40,000 people across the country had been killed.
Join us as we re-discover the London of the 1940's. Inevitably much has changed since those dark days, but a great deal of evidence remains to evoke powerful images of these momentous days.
Walks last from 2 hours to 5 hours depending on your requirements.
Prices from £12.50
Example London Walks
The City of London Walk
A walk through the heart of the capital to uncover a world of firewatchers, ARP wardens and auxiliary firefighters. The City of London was a prime target for the Luftwaffe. Our walk will tell a story of bravery and courage in the face of, at times, overwhelming odds.
Westminster Walk
Bustling and vibrant today, no less so in the 1940's. This walk takes in the London that would have been familiar to thousands of American servicemen. Visit with us the pubs in which they would have drank, the buildings they used to plan and the parks they used as temporary encampments. We will also have a chance to listen out for any nightingales in Berkeley Square.
