Somme Background Information
Intended to be the great breakthrough, the first day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1st 1916 became infamous as the worst day in the history of the British Army. 20,000 were killed for only minor gains in enemy territory.
Lions led by donkeys who sent wave after wave of young men to a pointless death or is there a more complex story to tell? Was this the battle that paved the way to ultimate Allied victory in 1918? Join us as we try to make sense of one of the most horrific and at times heartbreaking episodes of the First World War.
The Somme today remains a stark and poignant reminder of the futility of war.
